The Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji)

The official name of this World Heritage site is Rokuon-ji. However, because of its famous gold-covered reliquary hall, it is more commonly known as the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji).

The Silver Pavilion (Ginkakuji)

The official name of the Silver Pavilion, a designated National Treasure, is Jisho-ji. It is said to have been named the Silver Pavilion during the Edo Period, as a contrast to the Golden Pavilion.

Shokoku Temple

Shokokuji is the main temple of the Rinzai Shokoku sect. Many cultural treasures and arts, including 5 National Treasures from Shokoku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, the Silver Pavilion, and other temples, and 144 important cultural properties are displayed in the Shotenkaku Museum.

East Hongan Temple (Higashi Hongan-ji)

The main temple of Shinshu Otani sect. The temple's main attraction is the massive Goeido Gate, which is considered one of the top three gates in Kyoto.

West Hongan Temple (Nishi Hongan-ji)

Nishi Hongan-ji, a World Heritage site, is the main temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect (True Essence of the Pure Land Teaching). Located on Horikawadori, it contains National Treasures and important cultural properties, including the Amidado (Hall of the Amitābha Buddha), Mieido Hall, and Karamon Gate.

Kamigamo Shrine (Kamigamo Jinja)

The expansive, verdant grounds of the World Heritage Kamigamo Shrine are the setting for shrine rituals praying for productive grain harvests, such as the Kurabeuma.

Seimei Shrine (Seimei Jinja)

Kawaramachi

Shijo Kawaramachi is one of the busiest shopping areas in Kyoto. The narrow streets of Ponto-cho are densely packed with shops, Teramachi and Shinkyogoku feature numerous gift shops and restaurants, while Nishiki, known as "Kyoto's kitchen", has stores where different kinds of food can be purchased.
